Molicel P30B vs P42A vs P50B: Which Cell for Your Drone Battery?
The P30B is the lightest and cheapest, the P42A is the balanced all-rounder, and the P50B gives the most capacity and the highest discharge current. Choose P30B for small, weight-sensitive builds, P42A for most 5-inch class and long-range platforms, and P50B when you need maximum endurance or power.
All three are lithium-ion cells made by Molicel (E-One Moli Energy), and all three are used in Vult Dynamics battery packs.
Quick comparison
| Molicel P30B | Molicel P42A | Molicel P50B | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Format | 18650 | 21700 | 21700 |
| Cell capacity | 3000 mAh | 4200 mAh | 5000 mAh |
| Continuous discharge (Vult 1P packs) | 30 A in our packs | 45 A | 60 A |
| Best for | Micro, 3-inch, light 5-inch | 5-inch, recon, long-range | Heavy payload, maximum range, high power |
| Vult 6S1P pack | 64.8 Wh | 90.7 Wh | 108 Wh |
What is the difference between 18650 and 21700 cells?
The numbers are the cell's dimensions: an 18650 is 18 mm wide and 65 mm long, a 21700 is 21 mm by 70 mm. The larger 21700 holds more energy per cell, so a pack with the same cell count carries more capacity. The tradeoff is a bit more weight per cell and a larger pack.
When should I choose the P30B?
- You are building a micro, 3-inch or light 5-inch quad where every gram counts.
- You want the lowest price.
- Your motors and ESC do not need high sustained current.
Packs: 4S1P 3000 mAh, 6S1P 3000 mAh, 6S2P 6000 mAh.
When should I choose the P42A?
- You fly a standard 5-inch class or a recon platform and want more flight time without a big weight jump.
- You want a balance of capacity, discharge and weight.
Packs: 4S1P 4200 mAh, 6S1P 4200 mAh, 6S2P 8400 mAh.
When should I choose the P50B?
- Range or payload is the priority and you can accept the extra cost.
- Your airframe draws high current in climbs, bursts or heavy-lift operation.
Packs: 4S1P 5000 mAh, 6S1P 5000 mAh, 6S2P 10000 mAh.
How does adding a second parallel string (2P) change things?
A "2P" pack puts two cells side by side in each position, doubling capacity and discharge current at the same voltage. The 6S2P 10000 mAh pack, for example, is built from P50B cells and is rated for 120 A continuous. The tradeoff is roughly double the weight of the matching 1P pack.
Are Molicel cells NDAA compliant?
Molicel cells are manufactured in Taiwan, which is not a covered country under the NDAA provisions that restrict Chinese, Russian, Iranian and North Korean content. Vult Dynamics assembles packs in the United States and documents the sourcing for each pack. See the full NDAA battery guide.
Frequently asked questions
Is P42A or P50B better for long-range drones?
P50B has higher capacity, so it can fly longer on the same cell count. P42A is lighter and cheaper. For maximum range with a fixed weight budget, compare watt-hours per gram for each pack.
Can I mix P30B, P42A and P50B packs on the same drone?
Avoid it. Flying packs with different cells, capacities or ages together causes uneven current sharing and hurts reliability. Use matching packs.
What is the difference between a cell rating and a pack rating?
The cell rating is the limit for one cell. The pack rating also depends on wiring, connector and how many parallel strings share the load. Use the pack rating for build decisions.
