4S vs 6S Drone Batteries: Which Is Right for Your Build?
Choose 4S for small, light drones and 6S for most 5-inch and larger builds, long-range flights and anything carrying a payload. 6S runs at a higher voltage (21.6 V nominal vs 14.4 V for Li-ion), so the same power needs less current, which usually means better efficiency and less heat.
What do "4S" and "6S" mean?
The number is how many cells are wired in series. Each Li-ion cell is about 3.6 V nominal (4.2 V fully charged), so:
| 4S | 6S | |
|---|---|---|
| Nominal voltage | 14.4 V | 21.6 V |
| Full charge | 16.8 V | 25.2 V |
| Cells in series | 4 | 6 |
Why does higher voltage matter?
Power is voltage times current. For the same power, 6S draws about one third less current than 4S. Lower current means less heat in the wiring, ESC and motors, and less voltage sag under load. You also need a motor, propeller and ESC combination designed for the higher voltage.
4S vs 6S at a glance
| 4S | 6S | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Micro, 3-inch, light-weight builds | 5-inch and up, long-range, payload |
| Weight | Lighter | Heavier |
| Efficiency | Good | Better at high power |
| Cost | Lower | Higher |
| Requires | Standard setup | Components rated for 6S |
Which Vult packs are available?
4S1P: 3000 mAh P30B, 4200 mAh P42A, 5000 mAh P50B.
6S1P: 3000 mAh P30B, 4200 mAh P42A, 5000 mAh P50B.
6S2P (high capacity): 6000 mAh, 8400 mAh, 10000 mAh.
All packs use Molicel cells, XT60 connectors and are assembled in the USA from NDAA-compliant components. See the NDAA battery guide.
Should I use Li-ion or LiPo?
Li-ion cells such as Molicel packs give more energy per gram than typical LiPo packs, which is why they dominate long-range flying. LiPo packs tolerate very high discharge rates better. For endurance-focused sUAS and FPV, Li-ion is the usual choice.
Frequently asked questions
Can I run a 6S battery on a 4S drone?
Only if your ESC, motors and flight controller are rated for 6S. Using a higher-voltage battery on parts rated for 4S can destroy them.
Is 6S always better than 4S?
No. 4S is lighter and cheaper, and ideal for small drones that don't need the extra power.
What does "1P" or "2P" mean?
It is the number of cells in parallel. 2P doubles capacity and discharge current at the same voltage.
What is the recommended cut-off voltage?
For our 6S packs, the recommended cut-off is 16.2 V. Check the spec table on each product page for the pack you buy.
